Book Review: You Don’t Own Me by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke

I absolutely love love love Mary Higgins Clark books. And movies too! I have been reading her books since I was 17! I don’t remember how I discovered them but I love her storytelling and the relatable characters. I’m also from New York so many of her stories take place in places I know. That’s always fun! Her latest book lived up to my expectations and it would be the perfect beach read. You won’t be able to put it down...

Laurie Moran is the lead character and she’s a television producer of Under Suspicion. This is the fifth book in the series. Her television show tries to solve cold cases with the participation of family and friends of the victims. So far the show has a perfect track record at solving cases.

A celebrity doctor was murdered and his wife is the #1 suspect. They haven’t been able to prove she killed her husband but his parents (total Manhattan socialites) make it well know they believe their daughter in law to have killed their son. Lots of plot twists in this story...We hear from senators, judges and former patients of the doctor. Everyone’s a suspect and everyone has something to hide.

Laurie gets helping solving these crimes from her federal judge fiancé Alex, former NYPD police commissioner dad, and her tv assistants, Grace and Jerry.

This book was fun and entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend this easy read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! I would love for them to start making her books into movies again!

Have you read any Mary Higgins Clark books?

Week Seven Accutane Update

Hello darlings! Hope you all had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend. I spent the weekend back Upstate with my family. ❤️

I absolutely cannot believe I’ve been on accutane for seven weeks. It’s kinda crazy how quickly time flies by. I have no no no regrets about going on this medication. I’m NOT recommending it to anyone and it’s important to have many many many conversations with your doctor but so far,  very pleased.

My face is starting to getting the slightest bit drier but nothing I can’t handle. I’m using IT Cosmetics oil free moisturizer. The only other thing I’ve changed up is my foundation. I don’t know why foundation is so hard to find!

I’m currently using oxgenetix foundation because my spa and dermatologist highly recommended it. But there’s one huge problem...the price. It’s $66 for a half an ounce! The bottle literally lasts less than 3 weeks. I may have to go back to my Chanel...I’ll let you know.

Besides that, so far so good!

Have a wonderful week!

Week Five & Six Accutane Update

Hi darlings!

So sorry I missed my update last week. Things were a bit crazy and it totally slipped my mind! Here are my updates for weeks five and six.

I had my first visit with my derm last weekend and he said we may have to extend my treatment by another month. My face isn’t really dry at all and there have been no major changes. He feels like I should be a lot more dry than what I currently am. A little disappointed but at this point, I really don’t care about an extra 30 days.

Surprisingly, my ears, scalp and feet are dry! Yeah my lips aren’t as moist but it’s not so bad. But my ears? They peel like crazy!!! I have to put lotion on them throughout the day!

Other than dryness, thank goodness no other side effects! I’ll be posting my makeup routine soon!

Enjoy the rest of your week! ❤️

Week 4 Accutane Update

Hi darlings! Happy Memorial Day!!! I love that we are kicking off Summer! It’s hands down my favorite season! Parades, BBQs, beaches, pools, and watermelon! Woooo hoooo!

Here’s my weekly update! Time is flying by a little too quickly! Slow down!

This week I’m more dry. I’m starting to flake all over my body including my ears! No one ever tells you about that! Back, face, scalp and ears!

Surprisingly my lips are ok. Do they peel? Yes. Are they dry? Yes, but not as bad as I thought. I’m mostly surprised by my back and ears. Shea Butter and coconut oil are my best friends.

Tomorrow I go for bloodwork and hopefully get another round of meds!

So far...knock on wood... no regrets. For me a the best decision I’ve ever made.

Have a wonderful week!

Week Three Accutane Update

Hi darlings!

I’m a bit late on this but better late than never. I can’t believe I’m into week 3!

This has been the week of purging! Everything is making me breakout. I have been using all of my same products and it’s fresh pimples everyday. Nothing extreme because I’ve had worse but I still need to use concealer.

My nails are also becoming more brittle. Even with my powder dip nails, my fingernails are splitting. It’s annoying. My eyes are still a bit dry and now my lips but nothing I can’t handle.

I’m still not using facial moisturizer everyday because it leaves me too oily but I have been using coconut oil on my body every night.

I’m looking forward to having a crystal clear complexion!

Happy Almost Friday!

Week Two Accutane Update

Hello darlings. Happy Monday!

Just checking in for another quick update.

So far, no real changes. I am starting to get a bit more dry and peeling. Just lips and face. BUT I am still very sensitive to products. I tried using a hydrating cleanser and thicker moisturizer and my skin isn’t having it. NOT AT ALL. Maybe I was the only one thinking this…but I thought after Accutane, I would be able to use a lot more beauty products. Well after two weeks, so far that doesn’t seem to be the case. I will still be very strict about the products I’m using. If it works for me, I need to stick to it. My dry eyes aren’t really that bad anymore.

I am starting to get dry on my body. Loads of body oil and lotions needed.

One last thing, I do drink a lot more water. On Saturday, I was super busy and didn’t drink that much...well I had a headache developing and my body reminded me to…HYDRATE!

Let’s see what week three brings!!

Enjoy your week!

Week One Accutane Update

Hi lovelies.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I just wanted to give a quick Accutane update. I finished week one! Woooooo!!! Knock on wood but so far I am SUPER pleased. I know I know. It has only been a week so I should calm down.

I had big hesitations about going on Accutane. So many people around me were so judgmental and freely giving their opinions and I was extremely afraid of all the side effects. I am under close supervision and my doctor has been a blessing and answers all of my questions and emails within minutes!

So far I haven’t experienced any side effects except dry eyes and scalp. I actually had to stop using the heavy moisturizer I bought. I know I have to start moisturizing soon but I did it on day one and started breaking out like crazy. So I had to switch back to my CeraVe Daily Moisturizing lotion. I use Aquaphor every night and throughout the day so I haven’t experienced extreme dry lips so far. So far the only difference to my normal routine is using some eye drops and having to use a dandruff shampoo.

This past Friday I had a wedding and the makeup artist did my makeup and used a lot. I was wearing Make Up Forever primer, Nars Radiant foundation, and Bare Minerals BarePro powder foundation. It was a lot and the following morning I had a few breakouts. I now know that after Accutane, I cannot go crazy with the makeup! I have to still be super careful! Besides that…no issues!

I can’t wait to see some improvement! I’ll keep you all updated!

It’s time…I’m going on Accutane

Hi lovelies.

It has been awhile. I truly miss blogging but I decided to take a break because my skin was an absolute mess. I have finally made the decision to go on Accutane. After 4 years of acne and trying everything under the sun…I know it’s time. I have tried almost every skincare and makeup brand at Nordstrom, Macy’s, Sephora, and Ulta. I go to the dermatologist every 2 weeks and am on oral and topical prescriptions. I have gone vegan! I get professional facials monthly. My face is burning, my face has scars, and I still get breakouts. I have no idea what else to do and honestly…I can’t afford any of this anymore. It’s time to put this madness and obsession to rest since this is all I think about.

Years ago, I used to never think about makeup or skincare. I would just grab whatever was on sale! I would only order from QVC. Now I research ingredients, I stalk reviews, and I go into store for a sample.

Honestly…enough…enough…ENOUGH! I am done.

I have wasted so much money on products and just end up giving it all away. I haven’t been writing any beauty product reviews because nothing works!

Hopefully Accutane gives me the relief I am looking for! Let’s hope and pray…

Acne Update

Hello darlings. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Just wanted to give a quick update on my acne. Since I returned from Disney about 4 months ago, my skin has been absolutely horrendous. Like bad. Cystic pimples everywhere and whiteheads for days. I am back to square one and it’s extremely depressing. I almost went an entire year with my face being perfect. Even in the summer which is my most difficult time…my skin was perfect.

Here are a few mistakes that I made:

  1. I started playing around with products again. I admit it. This is totally my fault. I was good for about 2 years with sticking to my regular makeup routine. In my quest for cruelty free and vegan makeup…I messed up and my face didn’t like the changes…
  2. My nutritionist recommended I take basic b complex vitamins and dietary changes. This is my second time trying to add b complex to my routine and my skin hates it. I think biotin doesn’t agree with me. Since I am a vegetarian, my nutritionist thinks it’s very important but I am trying to incorporate it by other ways. This just doesn’t work for me.
  3. My diet is very sugar, dairy, and carb heavy. All things that are no-nos.

I have been going back and forth on whether I want to go vegan. I’m thinking even part-time vegan is better than my current diet. I saw my dermatologist over the weekend and he recommended I remove dairy and gluten for my diet for two weeks and see if I notice a different. I am also back on oral meds. This is pretty much the last resort before I go on Accutane. I really don’t want to go down that road but I am sick of acne. It has been over two years for me and I don’t wish it on anyone. It’s frustrating, depressing, and embarrassing. I feel like it has taken over my life.

Today is day one. I’ll circle back in two weeks and let you know how it’s going.

Lawless Beauty

Lawless Beauty | Musings of a Gossip

Hello darlings! Hope you’re all well. I wanted to share something a little different on the blog....clean beauty.

So I’ve been going back and forth with the Clean Beauty trend. Of course I want to use cleaner products and want to avoid anything that can cause illness in the future....BUT with my extremely sensitive acne-prone skin, it’s extremely difficult to find products that work for me even with conventional beauty products. My main reason for wanting to switch over to clean beauty is because cruelty free products is becoming extremely important to me. I normally only wear Chanel, Armani, YSL and Nars which are brands that all test on animals.

I follow Annie Lawless on Instagram and I think she’s such an inspiration and extremely motivating. I love love love the whole item of clean yet chic beauty products. She proves that Clean Beauty can be luxurious as well. During her 12 days of Christmas sale, I picked up a few items...I purchased her Woke Up Like This full coverage foundation, Seal the Deal translucent powder and her lipstick in the color “George”. I had purchased her lipstick before in the shade “Leo”.

It pains me to write this...it truly does because I wanted to love these products so badly but I’m on the fence about all of them. I’ll try to use the products I have because I really want to use them and not give them to a friend but at the moment, I can’t see myself repurchasing. Let’s break this down:

Lawless Beauty | Musings of a Gossip

1. Foundation- the bottle design is stunning and I love how the foundation has a pump! Brilliant! (My Chanel doesn’t). The formula is smooth and very easy to blend but it’s too dewy for my oily skin. I like looking natural and dewy but this is dewy and throughout the day it looks caked on me. Also, if I start to sweat, the foundation turns white in those areas. It also shows  every single bit of texture of my face. If I have one bump, it will definitely show. I absolutely wish my skin was perfect and smooth, but that’s not the case...I can see myself using this up during the colder months but during the summer, my skin will destroy this formula and make it break up! I’m trying to play around with different setting powders but so far only Laura Mercier can control this formula. I also now look mix it with this Chanel foundation. My Chanel is a matte formula so it tends to control the Lawless’ dewy formula. I think it’s a great foundation for the right skin type. In my oily skin, it also rubs off on everything, clothes, my coat, on people! If I touch my face, it rubs off and I have to use powder to cover it. Sometimes when I’m applying it, the color rubs off and I have to apply more foundation in that one area and pounce in with my Beauty Blender.  I don’t want to mix foundations so this one will get used up and I’ll probably just stick to my Chanel.

2. Seal the Deal: I love how this powder doesn’t have anything harmful in it, especially no talc! But it doesn’t set my makeup for long and by the end of the day, under my eyes look horrible and my foundation begins to break up on my face. It doesn’t leave flashback and doesn’t leave any white residue but it’s not the best setting powder I’ve ever used. I’ll try to mix a bit with my Laura Mercier to balance out the two but then, after I use it up, I won’t repurchase.

Lawless Beauty | Musings of a Gossip

3. Lip Gloss: this was my second attempt with this product. Back in April I purchased the shade Leo and it was horrible on me! It was a peach color and I hated the way it looked on my lips. This time I purchased George which is a medium shade of nude. It’s exactly what I like. The formula goes on smoothly but it makes my lips look super dry and cracked. If I put shea butter underneath, it makes the lip gloss slide all over the place. The applicator is perfect but one of the ingredients tends to leak. If I put it in my makeup bag, I have liquid residue on all my stuff. So I leave the lip gloss inside one of my makeup jars and apply it before I get on the subway on the way to work. This way I’m not carrying it with me and doesn’t leak and I’m using it up because usually no one except strangers see me first thing in the morning. Beautiful packaging, pretty shade but too drying and too much work.

Like I previously said, I really want to use more “Clean” products but I seem to be wasting more money because I’m trashing or donating everything I’ve purchased so far. I think the “Clean” beauty trend is amazing and can’t wait to see more but just like with conventional makeup, you just have to find the right products that work for you. So far I haven’t found.

I love Lawless Beauty but I’ll have to admire from afar!

Have you tried any of these products? Are you a fan of “Clean Beauty”?

Laura Mercier Translucent Pressed Setting Powder

Hi loves!!!!

My skin has been so problematic over the last few months. I have no idea what’s happening! I think I’ve been experimenting a bit too which with new products and my skin isn’t having it.

Back in October, I bought the Laura Mercier pressed powder for my trip to Florida. I have used the loose powder version for years so I figured I would be the pressed powder for travel. (I hate a mess!) I had no idea the pressed and loose versions would be so different from one another!

Looking back at my Florida photos, I can notice a white cast over on my face. The loose version leaves no residue or flashback! Ugh. So disappointing. I also used the powder for two weeks straight after Christmas break and I noticed I had really bad clogged pores and breakouts. It’s safe to say I won’t be repurchasing this in the future!

What’s the take away?

1. The pressed and loose version of the same product can be polar opposites. Just because one works for you, that doesn’t mean the other will.

2. Don’t buy new makeup and try it out on the day of an important event or major trip! Try the new product out BEFORE you leave and take a few test photos! Flashback is not cute!

3. Introduce new products one by one so you know which products are causing the breakouts. Trying 3 new products at once isn’t a good idea because it’s harder to track down the troublemaker!

That’s it for me! Have a lovely week!

3 Beauty Products I Don’t Like

Happy New Year darlings!!! Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Over the holidays I tried three popular products and I DID NOT alike them. In my opinion, they were not worth the money at all even though they have loads of positive reviews.

Here are my thoughts....

1. Mario Badescu Rosewater Facial Spray: I loved this spray when I first started using it but after a few days, I started to break out. I do have extremely sensitive and acne prone skin so many things make me breakout. I used this facial spray to set my makeup and the results were beautiful. My makeup blended together beautifully and I especially loved the look of my foundation...dewy, plump and healthy! I don’t think the smell was strong and went away quickly. My only issue were the bumps they came a few days after use...I tried to finish up the spray by using it for my hair but it turned out not to be worth it. I dumped the little bit I had and recycled my bottle. I’ll pass on this next time. Thank goodness I bought the smaller bottle!

2. French Girl Rose Lip Polish: I maybe the only person in the world to not like this but it was a complete waste of time for me! My lips started bleeding a few weeks ago due to the NYC cold weather and my strong acne meds. The combo is always brutal this time of year! So I bought this scrub thinking it would help get rid of my chapped, cracked and flaking lips...wrong! It was a complete waste of time for me and did absolutely nothing! The only think that helped was shea butter I bought at Wholefoods! It was the best thing for my lips! I reapply all day long as soon as it wears off. Within a day I noticed a HUGE difference. I swear by it now and have been telling everyone. Shea butter is my new go to and I’ll never be without it again! I’ll be using it all year long. I’ll also be using it all over my body. I love it! I am giving this scrub to a friend and I’ll never buy again.

3. Pai Gentle Hydrating Cleanser: I’m trying to get into the clean beauty trend. It has been a hit and miss for me. I ordered a little gift set from Follain and this cleanser was included. Thank goodness it’s a small tube. It smelled absolutely wonderful and the scent didn’t make me sick! (Certain smells trigger my migraines) It’s a hydrating cleanser and even though I normally have oily skin, due to Winter, my skin has been dry lately. I absolutely hated this cleanser and will never repurchase. It felt like I was putting hand lotion on my face. My face totally didn’t feel clean! It was hydrating and my skin felt super soft and definitely not stripped of its natural oils but I left like there was residue on my face after using this. I had to go back in with my CereVe flaming cleanser to really feel clean. I just wasn’t a fan at all. Even if I had dry skin, no thanks to the feeling of washing my face with hand lotion. Thank you, next.

What popular products have you tried and ended up hating?

Have an amazing week!
